7-day Morocco tour from Tangiers to Marrakech overview:

Experience Morocco in its most complete and captivating form on this 7-day journey that seamlessly blends imperial heritage, dramatic mountain landscapes, ancient caravan routes, and the timeless magic of the Sahara Desert. From the coastal Tangier to vibrant Marrakech, every day unfolds like a living story—rich in culture, color, and unforgettable scenery.

Begin in Tangier, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and wander through atmospheric medinas, historic landmarks, and iconic viewpoints before arriving in the dreamy blue streets of Chefchaouen, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Continue deeper into Morocco’s heritage as Roman ruins, sacred towns, and imperial capitals reveal centuries of layered history, from Volubilis and Meknes to the cultural heart of Fez, home to one of the world’s oldest living medieval cities.

From the imperial cities, the journey transforms dramatically as you cross the Middle Atlas Mountains into cedar forests, alpine towns, and sweeping valleys on your way to the golden dunes of Merzouga. Here, the Sahara reveals its full grandeur: camel trekking into sunset-lit dunes, a night under a sky filled with stars, and immersive encounters with desert culture in Khamlia and Rissani.

The adventure continues along ancient caravan routes through Tinghir and the Todgha Gorges, where towering canyon walls and lush oases create some of Morocco’s most striking natural scenery. Travel onward through the sculpted landscapes of the Dades Valley, rose-filled valleys, and fortified kasbahs that echo centuries of Berber life.

Finally, cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n’Tichka Pass, passing cinematic landscapes and UNESCO-listed treasures like Ait Ben Haddou, before descending into the vibrant energy of Marrakech, where your journey concludes.

This is more than a tour—it is a carefully curated trip through Morocco’s most iconic contrasts: ocean and desert, ancient cities and living traditions, silence and spectacle. Every day brings a new landscape, a new story, and a deeper connection to the soul of the country.

One week in Morocco itinerary

Day 1Tangiers to Chefchaouen

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely walk downhill into the enchanting Medina of Tangier, a captivating maze of whitewashed streets where centuries of history blend effortlessly with contemporary Moroccan life. Wander through its atmospheric alleyways, discovering hidden artisan workshops, colourful markets, and boutiques showcasing handwoven textiles, intricate metal lanterns, fine leather goods, and the fragrant spices for which Morocco is renowned.

Pass through the vibrant Grand Socco, Tangier’s historic meeting place, where locals gather to shop, enjoy mint tea, and watch the rhythm of everyday life unfold—a wonderful opportunity to soak up the city’s unique atmosphere and capture memorable photographs.

Leaving the city behind, travel to the legendary Caves of Hercules, where mythology and nature come together. According to legend, Hercules rested here after completing his twelve labours. The cave’s iconic sea-facing opening, naturally shaped like the African continent, offers one of Morocco’s most striking coastal views, framed by the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

A short drive brings you to Cap Spartel, the dramatic promontory where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Standing beside its historic lighthouse, enjoy sweeping panoramic views across the coastline and, on clear days, all the way to the shores of southern Europe.

In the afternoon, relax at the iconic Café Hafa, perched on the cliffs above the Mediterranean since 1921. Sip a traditional mint tea while taking in spectacular sea views from one of Tangier’s most beloved cafés—a place that has inspired generations of artists and writers, including Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, and the Rolling Stones.

Continue east to the elegant city of Tetouan, whose beautifully preserved UNESCO-listed medina reflects its rich Andalusian heritage. If time permits, enjoy a stroll through the graceful Place El Feddan (Feddan Park) and admire the striking façade of the Church of Nuestra Señora de las Victorias, where Spanish and Moroccan influences blend harmoniously.

By late afternoon, arrive in the magical Blue City of Chefchaouen, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Settle into your charming riad in the heart of the medina and spend the evening wandering through its peaceful blue-painted streets, where every corner reveals another picture-perfect scene and the relaxed mountain atmosphere invites you to slow down and savour the moment.

Day 2Chefchaouen- Volibulus- Meknes- Fez

Before you continue your journey, spend the morning exploring the enchanting Blue City of Chefchaouen, where every winding alleyway feels like a living work of art. Stroll through the medina’s maze of cobalt and azure-painted streets, where local artisans display handcrafted textiles, woven blankets, ceramics, and leather goods, while the aroma of freshly baked bread and traditional pastries drifts from neighborhood bakeries.

Pause in the lively Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the vibrant heart of the town, and savour a refreshing glass of traditional mint tea as the warm terracotta walls of the historic kasbah provide a striking contrast to the surrounding shades of blue—a favourite scene for photographers from around the world.

Visit the beautifully restored Kasbah Museum, whose peaceful Andalusian gardens, ethnographic collections, and historic exhibits offer fascinating insight into the culture and heritage of the Rif Mountains. Climb the ancient towers for spectacular panoramic views over Chefchaouen’s cascading blue rooftops and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Leaving the Rif Mountains behind, continue south towards Fès, with the option to visit the remarkable Roman archaeological site of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Roman cities in North Africa. Wander among its impressive mosaics, triumphal arches, temples, and basilicas, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills and fertile countryside. For a deeper appreciation of the site’s rich history, an expert local guide is highly recommended.

A short drive away lies the sacred hilltop town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, one of Morocco’s most important pilgrimage destinations. While the mausoleum itself is reserved for Muslim visitors, the charming whitewashed streets, bustling market square, and panoramic viewpoints offer an authentic glimpse into this deeply spiritual town.

After lunch, continue to Meknes, one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities and the grand capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Discover its monumental ramparts, admire the magnificent Bab Mansour, widely regarded as Morocco’s finest ceremonial gate, visit the atmospheric Qara Prison, and explore the vast Sahrij Swani water basin, once an ingenious hydraulic system serving the imperial city. As some monuments are occasionally undergoing restoration, your guide may suggest spending additional time exploring the extraordinary ruins of Volubilis, allowing for a more relaxed and rewarding experience before continuing your journey to Fès, where your day concludes.

Day 3Fez Guided Tour

After breakfast, set out on a guided exploration of Fès, Morocco’s oldest Imperial City and its spiritual and cultural heart. Step into the extraordinary Fès el-Bali, the UNESCO-listed medieval medina, where more than a thousand years of history come alive through a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, bustling souks, hidden courtyards, and magnificent monuments. Remarkably preserved, this ancient city remains one of the world’s largest living medieval urban centres.

Your tour includes the exquisite Bou Inania Medersa, a masterpiece of Marinid architecture adorned with intricate cedar wood carvings, delicate stucco work, and colourful zellij mosaics. Continue through the vibrant medina to the renowned Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, where you can admire the beautiful courtyard from the main entrance. Founded in 859 by the visionary scholar Fatima al-Fihri, the adjoining University of Al Quaraouiyine is recognised by UNESCO and the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest continuously operating university.

As you wander through the medina, experience the sights, sounds, and aromas of traditional Fès, where artisans continue to practise centuries-old crafts using techniques passed down through generations.

Your visit concludes at one of the city’s celebrated pottery cooperatives, where skilled craftsmen demonstrate the traditional methods of shaping, glazing, painting, and firing the distinctive blue-and-white ceramics for which Fès is famous. Watch master artisans at work and admire a remarkable collection of handcrafted pieces that reflect the city’s rich artistic heritage.

Day 4Fez to Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, begin one of Morocco’s most spectacular journeys as you travel from the imperial cities to the vast Sahara Desert. The route winds through the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains to the charming town of Ifrane, affectionately known as the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture, crisp mountain air, flower-filled parks, and snowy winters, making it the country’s premier ski destination.

Continue through the fragrant cedar forests of Azrou, home to ancient cedar trees and the playful Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey species native to North Africa. As you travel south, watch the scenery transform dramatically—from lush mountain landscapes and rolling hills to the rugged beauty of Morocco’s pre-desert plains.

Stop for lunch in Midelt, a peaceful Berber town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. The region is renowned for its rich geological heritage, where fossils dating back hundreds of millions of years reveal that this landscape was once covered by an ancient sea. Midelt is also famous for its apple orchards, mineral deposits, and spectacular mountain views.

In the afternoon, descend into the breathtaking Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s most impressive oases. Here, thousands of date palms form a vibrant ribbon of green that winds through dramatic canyons and desert plateaus, creating one of the country’s most iconic landscapes. Passing through traditional oasis villages and the fossil-rich town of Erfoud, often considered the gateway to the Sahara, you arrive at the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

As the afternoon light softens, meet your camel caravan and set off on an unforgettable trek across the rolling sand dunes. Journey deep into the heart of the Sahara as the desert glows in ever-changing shades of gold, amber, and crimson beneath the setting sun. Upon reaching your luxury desert camp, settle into your private tent before enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner beneath a canopy of stars. The evening comes alive with Berber music around the campfire, offering an unforgettable introduction to the magic and tranquility of the Sahara Desert.

Day 5Sahara Desert Journey

For early risers, the day begins with the opportunity to witness one of the Sahara’s most unforgettable spectacles. Climb to the top of the golden sand dunes and watch the sun rise over the desert, as the first rays of light paint the landscape in breathtaking shades of gold and amber—a truly magical way to start your morning.

After breakfast, set off on a fascinating journey to discover the rich culture and history of the Moroccan Sahara.

Your first stop is the charming village of Khamlia, home to the renowned Gnawa community. Descendants of sub-Saharan Africans, the Gnawa have preserved their unique musical heritage for centuries. Enjoy an intimate live performance of their mesmerizing rhythms and soulful melodies, an unforgettable cultural experience that captures the spirit of the desert.

Continue to the historic town of Rissani, considered as the origin of Morocco’s Alaouite Dynasty, the country’s current royal family. Surrounded by hundreds of ancient ksars (fortified villages), Rissani is famous for its vibrant traditional souk, where locals gather to trade spices, fresh produce, handcrafted goods, and everyday treasures. Wander through its lively alleys and soak in the authentic atmosphere of one of southern Morocco’s most important market towns.

Built on the site of the legendary Sijilmassa, once a thriving crossroads for trans-Saharan caravans transporting salt, gold, and other precious goods from Timbuktu, Rissani offers a fascinating glimpse into Morocco’s rich trading history.

For lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to savor one of the region’s most authentic culinary specialties: Madfouna, often referred to as the “Berber pizza.” This delicious stuffed bread is freshly baked and generously filled with seasoned beef, onions, parsley, carrots, almonds, and a fragrant blend of local spices, offering a true taste of Saharan hospitality.

In the afternoon, return to your luxury desert camp for a well-deserved moment of relaxation. Unwind in the peaceful surroundings before witnessing another breathtaking Sahara sunset, as the golden dunes transform into a spectacular palette of warm colors—an unforgettable finale to your day in the desert.

Day 6Sahara desert to Dades Gorges

After breakfast at the desert camp, set off on a scenic journey toward Tinghir and the spectacular Toudgha Gorges. Along the way, discover the fascinating khettarat—an ancient underground irrigation system that has sustained oasis communities for centuries. You’ll have the opportunity to descend into these remarkable tunnels and admire the ingenuity of their design, which channels water underground to protect it from the intense desert heat before bringing it to the surface to nourish fertile fields.

Continue to the dramatic Toudgha Gorges, where towering limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a crystal-clear river. Take time to explore this breathtaking natural wonder on foot, whether strolling through the lush palm groves and traditional village gardens or venturing deeper into the canyon for unforgettable views.

In the afternoon, travel through the stunning Dades Valley, a landscape sculpted over millions of years. Once lying beneath an ancient sea, the region was shaped by layers of marine sediment that eventually formed the striking sandstone and limestone formations seen today. The uplift of the Earth’s crust created the majestic Atlas Mountains, leaving behind the dramatic valleys, colorful rock formations, and winding roads that make this one of Morocco’s most scenic regions.

Arrive at your charming hotel or traditional kasbah, where you can relax and enjoy the warm hospitality of southern Morocco before another day of discovery.

Day 7Dades Gorges to Marrakesh

After breakfast, begin your journey through the spectacular Dades Valley, following one of Morocco’s most scenic mountain roads. As you approach the Dades Gorges, the road twists dramatically through a series of iconic hairpin bends, offering breathtaking panoramic views and unforgettable photo opportunities. Take time to stretch your legs and admire the striking rock formations and rugged beauty of this remarkable landscape.

Continue through the enchanting Valley of the Roses, where thousands of fragrant Damask roses bloom each spring. The valley is renowned for its annual Rose Festival in May and for its locally produced rosewater, perfumes, cosmetics, and essential oils, all crafted using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations.

Your journey then leads to the lush oasis of Skoura, home to the beautifully restored Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco’s finest examples of traditional earthen architecture. Built entirely from adobe, the kasbah’s thick walls naturally keep its interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. A guided visit offers a fascinating glimpse into the history, architecture, and daily life of southern Morocco.

After lunch, continue to the legendary Aït Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous fortified village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This extraordinary ksar, with parts dating back to the 17th century, has served as the backdrop for countless international films and television productions, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Wander through its narrow alleyways and climb to the hilltop for sweeping views over the surrounding desert landscape.

The adventure continues across the majestic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco, crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. Along the winding route, enjoy ever-changing scenery of dramatic peaks, traditional Berber villages, and breathtaking valleys before descending towards the vibrant city of Marrakech, where you will arrive in the late afternoon.
