Tangier to Marrakech 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1Tangier- Tetouan- Chefchaouen- Meknes- Fes

Begin your Tangier to Marrakech Desert Tour by driving towards Tetouan, a beautiful Andalusian-inspired city known for its whitewashed architecture and UNESCO-listed medina. Depending on your schedule, stop to visit the Church of Nuestra Señora de las Victorias and take a relaxing stroll through Feddan Park before continuing towards the Rif Mountains.

From Tetouan, continue to the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen, where winding lanes, blue-painted houses, and colorful doors create one of Morocco’s most captivating towns. Take some time to wander through the kasbah, explore the atmospheric medina, and soak up the peaceful charm of this mountain town.

After lunch, leave Chefchaouen behind and continue towards Meknes, one of Morocco’s historic imperial cities. Stop at the impressive Bab Mansour Gate, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, before visiting Sahrij Souani, the grand water basin built during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail.

From Meknes, continue through the countryside to Fes, where you’ll arrive in the evening. Check into your traditional riad, enjoy dinner, and settle in for the night, ready to discover the cultural heart of Morocco the following day.

Day 2Fes Sightseeing

Fes is renowned as the oldest of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities and is widely celebrated as the country’s historic capital of craftsmanship and artisanship. Begin your morning exploring the fascinating Fes El Bali, the ancient Medina and cultural heart of the city.

Discover the exquisite architecture of the city’s historic madrasas, adorned with intricate zellige tiles, carved cedarwood and delicate stucco work. Continue to the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, housed in a beautifully restored traditional fondouk, where centuries-old woodworking traditions come to life.

Then venture deeper into the Medina to the iconic Chouara Tannery, one of Fes’s most fascinating sights. From the surrounding terraces, watch skilled artisans work the colourful leather vats using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Your final stop is a traditional pottery cooperative, where local craftsmen shape, paint and decorate the famous ceramics of Fes. Watch the artisans at work and discover the patience and precision behind Morocco’s distinctive pottery.

From carved cedarwood to colourful leather and hand-painted ceramics, Fes is more than a city to visit—it’s a living workshop where Moroccan craftsmanship has been perfected for centuries.

Day 3Fes- Ifrane- Ziz Valley- Merzouga Desert

Begin with an early morning departure from Fes, leaving the ancient city behind as you journey south towards the spectacular Middle Atlas Mountains. As the road climbs, the landscape transforms into lush cedar forests and dramatic mountain scenery. Stop along the way to see the famous Barbary macaques in their natural surroundings before continuing towards the desert.

After lunch, the scenery changes once again as you reach the breathtaking Ziz Valley, a vast oasis of palm groves stretching through the arid landscape. Take in the contrast between the lush green palms and the surrounding desert before continuing towards the Sahara.

Arrive at the desert in the afternoon, just in time for your approximately 1-hour camel ride across the golden dunes. Ride into the heart of the Sahara and climb the dunes to witness a magical sunset, as the endless sands glow in shades of gold and orange.

After sunset, continue to your luxury desert camp, where you’ll spend the night in a private tent with a comfortable bed and private bathroom with shower.

Day 4Merzouga- Todra Gorges- Dades Gorges

After breakfast at the desert camp, set off on a scenic journey toward Tinghir and the spectacular Toudgha Gorges. Along the way, discover the fascinating khettarat—an ancient underground irrigation system that has sustained oasis communities for centuries. You’ll have the opportunity to descend into these remarkable tunnels and admire the ingenuity of their design, which channels water underground to protect it from the intense desert heat before bringing it to the surface to nourish fertile fields.

Continue to the dramatic Toudgha Gorges, where towering limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a crystal-clear river. Take time to explore this breathtaking natural wonder on foot, whether strolling through the lush palm groves and traditional village gardens or venturing deeper into the canyon for unforgettable views.

In the afternoon, travel through the stunning Dades Valley, a landscape sculpted over millions of years. Once lying beneath an ancient sea, the region was shaped by layers of marine sediment that eventually formed the striking sandstone and limestone formations seen today. The uplift of the Earth’s crust created the majestic Atlas Mountains, leaving behind the dramatic valleys, colorful rock formations, and winding roads that make this one of Morocco’s most scenic regions.

Arrive at your charming hotel or traditional kasbah, where you can relax and enjoy the warm hospitality of southern Morocco before another day of discovery.

Day 5Dades Valley- Ait Ben Haddou- Marrakech

After breakfast, begin your journey through the spectacular Dades Valley, following one of Morocco’s most scenic mountain roads. As you approach the Dades Gorges, the road twists dramatically through a series of iconic hairpin bends, offering breathtaking panoramic views and unforgettable photo opportunities. Take time to stretch your legs and admire the striking rock formations and rugged beauty of this remarkable landscape.

Continue through the enchanting Valley of the Roses, where thousands of fragrant Damask roses bloom each spring. The valley is renowned for its annual Rose Festival in May and for its locally produced rosewater, perfumes, cosmetics, and essential oils, all crafted using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations.

Your journey then leads to the lush oasis of Skoura, home to the beautifully restored Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco’s finest examples of traditional earthen architecture. Built entirely from adobe, the kasbah’s thick walls naturally keep its interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. A guided visit offers a fascinating glimpse into the history, architecture, and daily life of southern Morocco.

After lunch, continue to the legendary Aït Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous fortified village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This extraordinary ksar, with parts dating back to the 17th century, has served as the backdrop for countless international films and television productions, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Wander through its narrow alleyways and climb to the hilltop for sweeping views over the surrounding desert landscape.

The adventure continues across the majestic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in Morocco, crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. Along the winding route, enjoy ever-changing scenery of dramatic peaks, traditional Berber villages, and breathtaking valleys before descending towards the vibrant city of Marrakech, where you will arrive in the late afternoon.
